I feel so grateful to this family for allowing me to document a Sunday afternoon at home, and for allowing me to share these pictures. When I decided a few months ago to offer a photo shoot for the family of a child with autism, I received many messages from amazing families and the people who love them. Robbie’s family was nominated by several of their friends, and I was extremely touched by this beautiful e-mail from his mom.
“Hi Maegan- I am writing because some very dear friends of mine have nominated our family for your autism photo shoot. We are a family of four. My husband, Steve, and I have two boys…..one in heaven and one with us. My older son, Michael, passed away tragically this past November. He would have been 14. Our younger son, Robbie, is 12 years old. He has autism, is non-verbal and beautiful. He loves to swing, jump on the trampoline and listen to music….the simple things in life. This opportunity would be such a treasure for our family. We have crazy and funny stories of trying to get pictures of Robbie and our family over the years. Thank you for thinking of families living with autism. While our journey has been challenging and heartbreaking, what I’ve learned is there is amazing kindness and love all around us too. I know there are many, many deserving families. Thanks for considering us. I’ve attached a snapshot of Robbie at “autism” camp last summer. He’s a cutie! Take care, Michelle”
May we all find comfort and joy in the simple things in life.
